‘Radio Kriola - Reflections On Portuguese Identity’ is a musical journey of Portugal, Africa and Brazil from Portuguese singer/songwriter Catarina Dos Santos. ‘Rádio Kriola’ is presented as a personal radio playlist of songs dedicated to the rhythms and music that inspired Catarina from a child through to adulthood. Catarina’s home town of Barreiro in Portugal was a cultural cradle with multi-cultural influences from Africa to inland Portugal. These are all part of the glorious fusions found on ‘Rádio Kriola’: a blend of Angolan, Cape Verdean, Brazilian and Portuguese music.
In ‘Menina Barco - Eu sou do Vale’ (Boat Girl - I'm from Vale), Catarina speaks of the neighbourhood in which she grew up – among a mix of Angolan, Portuguese, Cape Verdean, Mozambican and Guinean people and their struggles and strife. The lyrics for ‘Menina Barco - Eu sou do Vale’ were co-written with rapper and producer Chullage.
On ‘A Dancer’s Redemption’, Catarina fuses Afro-Brazilian lundu music with Portuguese fado; lundu music and dance has its roots in both Africa and Portugal. ‘Caminho’ (The Path) is a song about our journey through life, written in Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole, and was co-written in Paris by Catarina and the Brazilian musician/composer Dom La Nena.
‘Yoru’ is an abbreviation of ‘Yoruba’, the indigenous people of southwest Nigeria. Caterina sings of African traditions with lyrics that are a blend of Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole - an invented language. ‘Rádio Kriola’ is an uplifting album that celebrates the roots and branches of Portuguese music in all its forms and splendour, released internationally through ARC Music on July 27 2018.
