Hossam Ramzy Sabla Tolo IV: Tak Raka Takum ℗ & © 2014, ARC Music Review by: Nathaniel Stottlemyer Internationally celebrated percussionist and composer Hossam Ramzy, “Egypt’s Ambassador of Rhythm”, graces his audiences again with the latest installment to his Sabla Tolo series. Sabla Tolo IV: Tak Raka Takum continues where Sabla Tolo III left off, drawing inspiration from diverse cultures and rhythmic ideas and manifesting them with the Egyptian tabla and traditional instruments. This series of drum solos will excite bellydancers, percussionists and rhythm lovers alike. Hossam is remarkably graceful in making natural connections between culture influences. Sabla Tolo IV is an exemplary demonstration of his technical virtuosity and extensive rhythmic vocabulary. The album consists of several tracks which are traditional in the sense that the rhythms are primarily Arabic, phrasing is even and the songs feature many interesting rhythmic motives and modulations, including: “Ashan Battootah”, “Taw Am Al Saherat (The Twin Witches)”, “Ya weh-shah (You Bad Girl)”, “Farrrtuco Rave”, “Ra-Asny Yasham” and “Eskandarany (The Alexandrian).” The songs fusing cultural influences are the true gems of the album including: “Albi El Afreeky”, driven by West African rhythm and instruments; “Bahebbek Yasmik Eih (I Love You, Thingi-mi-jig)”, featuring a driving samba and fat saidi fusion; “Rio Maharaja (Mr. Kool)”, with rhythmically complex hints of Latin nañingo and samba; and “Samba Train to Cairo”, the album’s featured Egyptian-samba fusion for which Hossam is quickly becoming a trademark. Hossam draws also on flamenco and North African rhythms for the tracks “Flamenco Sweet”, influenced by Moroccan shaaby and “Dancing Chick to Chick”, inspired by Hossam’s sessions with Chick Corea. The title track, “Tak Raka Takum”, is the culmination one would expect from such a culturally diverse palate of rhythms that is Sabla Tolo IV. Hints of salsa, samba, rock and Egyptian flavors make up this fine featured entree. So Hossam, what’s for dessert?
