5 of 5 Stars!ARC Music Inc, 10/29/2010
This fine album of Moroccan music composed by Nour Eddine Fatty is not strictly traditional healing gnawa but gnawa-inspired, by instruments, tunes, and rite. It has the same call & response and trance rhythm (supplied by hand clapping, hajhoulj lute, qraqeb metallic clappers, and t'bel, bendir, and other drums). The ensemble of six focus on the stage of the gnawa rite dedicated to the color and spirit red. Gnawa, whose origins are sub-Saharan spirit worship, has merged with Islam in much the way ancient Incan spiritual practices have accommodated the Catholic church; songs invoke various slave spirits (compared to Sufi saints) and also Allah. In addition to songs, several instrumentals are included featuring drums and the Berber outher lute. Nour Eddine's pleasing, expressive voice and the strong rhythms, which make us want to dance, provide an excellent, utterly professional performance. This album would be a perfect addition to a world music collection. Debra Jan Bibel, Ph.D.
