Hungary has a considerable Gypsy population and Ternipe is one of the young bands that has joined the scene. This creative group features a traditional Hungarian Gypsy format with guitars, accordion and milk jugs, accompanying well crafted female and male lead vocals and harmonies.

Ternipe

The band was formed in 1989 by young people living in the Szabolcs-Szatmár county and Budapest. The members of Ternipe are young native Gypsies who strive to make their folk music and folk songs known. They found it necessary to establish such a musical band in order to popularize the authentic Gypsy culture and to overcome prejudice by fostering their native language and rich heritage. It is their aim to keep their traditional values alive.

The band's interpretation of the music is unique and has a hint of Far-Eastern and Balkan music in it. Ternipe sing their songs in their Gypsy (Roma) language "Lovari"; their instruments are accordion, violin, double bass, viola and the so-called 'mouth bass', as well as milk churns and spoons.

The members of Ternipe are Mária Balogh (vocals), Tünde Balogh (vocals), István Farkas (vocals, guitar, mandolin), Tibor Bangó (vocals, guitar) and Béla Lakatos (group director, vocals, milk churn, 'mouth bass').
