Taoist music is little-known in the west. This music on this recording is played by an ensemble using a wide range of stringed and wind instruments, and shows a close affinity with the more familiar “Silk and Bamboo” music popular in the Shanghai area. It is melodic and enjoyable to listen to, and gives an insight into an important area of Chinese culture. The music is surprisingly varied, from the slow and solemn Yaotan Ji (“Wonderland Hymn”) to the richly melodic Qupai Lianzou (“Qupai Legato”) to the fast, dynamic Xianhua Ji (“Flower Offering Hymn”). The recording is of consistently high quality, and the notes provide detailed information on the music, the musicians and the instruments, as well as background information on the temple and on Taoist music. Highly recommended.
