The title intrigued me, the record didn't. African hymns, yes, but they are mostly Western hymns and tunes with African words. Fine, I have no real quibble with that … but when it comes to the performance I am afraid I found it very disappointing by what I know of ARC performance standards. I don't think it's the African way to have the men's voices singing off key, for a start. Mind you, when they all get together, some of the sounds are very beautiful, but a lot of the time they don't! (And from some South African musicians we met recently who are in the know, the opinion is that Mara Louw 'ain't what she used to be'!) Sorry, first ever really disappointing ARC record in my ever-growing collection.
