EUCD1716 Fortuna – A Collection of Ladino Songs

Fortuna, Brazilian singer and composer of Jewish extraction, presents a collection of Sephardic songs, sung in Ladino and Hebrew. There are pieces from Spain, Morocco and Turkey and from all over the Mediterranean coast, with modern instrumental arrangements. “…an efficient blend of tight arrangements and the crystal-clear voice of Fortuna. The result is a flawless production worth hearing.” (Planeta magazine, São Paulo)

The majesty and power on cut #1, The Consecration de Moses, with Fortuna's pure, soaring voice and the simplicity of instrumentation chosen, is gloriously wonderful to experience and sets an opening standard that never flags on this CD. Fortuna and her musicians are ART and the quality of their collective and individual expressions is worthy of acclaim and award. The flamenco and acoustic guitars are perfection, percussion is outstanding, flute and clarinet enhance, and literally each musician involved plays with heart and spirit. Fortuna's clear, caressing vocals, filled with love, reverence, and passion, transport the listener to timeless cultures--be they Jewish Sephardic, Spanish, Moroccan, Turkish, and Balkan--as these 15 songs evidence. Three songs come from the 1993 release of La Prima Vez, four from Cantigas (1994), and 8 from Meditteraneo (1998). Cut #15 , My Mother-In-Law, is remarkable for its humor, of course, but it allows the listener another fine look at the artist's emotional depth. It is this reviewer's hope that any who hear Fortuna will allow themselves an equally emotional, soul-stirring journey, absent of grasping to understand unfamiliar languages.
